Edmonton Decorator | DIY | Chalkboard Paint

The Chalkboard Paint DIY Article of Your Dreams

Chalkboard paint is a modern design marvel. It allows you to instantly transform just about any surface into a canvas for your creativity. Write down an inspiration quote. Doodle a caricature. Then wipe it all away and start again. Tada!

I grew up in an era where teaching was done on a chalkboard. So I guess I still have fond memories of this school room esthetic.

Use chalkboard paint to create table top and galleries for children, customizable wine glasses for guests or simply a message center for your family.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Design Trend | Shower Curtain Panels

Say bye-bye to the single shower curtain and hello to curtain panels. This trend adds more style and glamour to your bathroom with very little cost.

When I go shopping, I am often disappointed with variety and options for shower curtains. They usually fall into three categories: a)Childish, b)Granny-ish, or c)White. Not exactly the perfect pick for every situation.

With the emergence of this new trend towards double panels, instead of one shower curtain, a new world of possibility opens up. Leave the "bath" aisle and head for "bed" and beyond to find new curtains for your washroom. And, as always, hang your curtains as high as possible to add visual height to your room.

The Fall Fashion Trends for 2012 are fully upon us. You will seen plenty of gold, leopard, black suede and oxblood in storefront windows. If you like these looks in your closet, you'll also like them in your home.

Here is my interpretation of this fall's fashion trends as they relate to the home. Enjoy!

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Design Trend | Brass Decor

Let's get down to brass tacks: warm metals are making a comeback. Shiny chrome and brushed nickel are being replaced by brass and copper accents. Don't worry, these aren't the awful yellowish metals of yesteryear. They are muted, and slightly more sophisticated.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Design Trend | Flame Stitch

I can't help but play The Doors "Light my Fire" in my head when I think of the latest design trend: Flame Stitch. I see this pattern as chevron's amped-up cousin. Similar lines, but even edgier. If it looks familiar, it's because the motif is very similar to that of Missoni's signature print.

Are you hot for Flame Stitch?

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Design Trend | Sliding Barn Doors

Slide into a New Trend

There's nothing country about me, and I certainly wasn't raised in a barn. So why am I loving this new design trend of sliding barn doors? Because it's practical and fabulous! A lot of times, doors open into space and "eat up" valuable real estate. I am a huge fan of pocket doors, but if they aren't installed at the time of construction, it can be a project that most aren't willing to undertake. Well, hellooooo sliding barn doors. A brilliant solution with a fraction of the headaches of demolition and renovation. From urban contemporary to cottage classic, there is a barn door style to fit your home.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Design Trend | White Walls

I grew up with a lot of "basic beige" on the walls in my childhood home. And, where there wasn't basic beige paint, there was wild wallpaper. Naturally, I grew up with a slight aversion to both of them.

I must confess: I love colour. Normally, beige walls bore me. And most of my clients put some colours on their walls.

However, with one of my latest design projects, I am leaning towards white walls. I think it can create an ultra fresh feel, if done right. I believe such a bare canvas would allow the other components of the room to "speak". Anyhow, I'm not even sure if this is a design trend yet, but I'm claiming it as such. What do you think?

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Design Trend | Hollywood Regency

Glitz, glamour and gorgeous: that's how I sum up the Hollywood Regency look. This design style focuses on making the home a showpiece for guests. Lacquer your furniture, hang velvet drapes, and make your tufted sofa a centre piece. This style can be achieved by combining classic pieces with flea market finds. Have fun, and relive Hollywood heydays!

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Edmonton Journal | Closet Conversion

There's a new trend that popped up in the design field. Many DIY decorators have been tearing off the doors from their closets and converting these spaces to open-concept living & working areas. I first spied this trend on Pinterest and knew that it would be a hit with my clients. Back in March, I even wrote a blog post about this emerging design trend.

Well, fast forward a few months and I've completed a closet conversion of my very own.

  1. Here is our closet looking rather sad and bare. Her shelves had been emptied and doors had been torn off.
The "Before" minus the mirrored doors
 2. The space needed to be redefined. The ceiling was dropped and new walls were framed.
The closet being re-framed to define the space
 3. Once the new walls and ceiling were in place, it was time to beautify it. Beadboard panelling was applied to the walls, and trim was added to the exterior.
Half way there. Bead board & trim has been added
 4. Finally, I had found some furniture to fit perfectly into our new closet. It looks like a custom fit!
Furniture added to the space to make it functional

5. And finally, she's remodelled and prettier than ever.

Oh, and I can't forget to mention, I was interviewed by the Edmonton Journal about this project. Read all about it here.
