Primary bedroom moodboard featuring Amazon Home Finds

When my husband and I decided to give our primary bedroom a makeover, we were determined to bid farewell to the ubiquitous "boob" light and welcome a more sophisticated lighting fixture. Enter the 16" globe chandelier, which perfectly fit the bill! Priced at approximately $230 CAD, it struck an ideal balance between affordability and quality.

In our quest to enhance the bedroom's aesthetics, we also opted for these elegant round mirrors, which we positioned above our end tables, behind our tabletop lamps. To my delight, these 24" mirrors exceeded all expectations in terms of construction and beauty, and at the time of purchase, they were a steal at around $75 CAD.

Our bedroom had long been missing a full-length mirror, and we stumbled upon a gem in the form of a 65" gold, recessed mirror with gently rounded edges. This mirror not only complemented our chandelier and the round mirrors adorning our bedside but also proved to be impressively sturdy. A piece of this quality would typically command a price tag in the several hundred dollars range, yet we acquired it for just $250 CAD.

Our next addition was a gold, wrap-around curtain rod, chosen for its ability to block out even more light when paired with blackout curtains. This combination created a cocoon-like sleep environment, perfect for a peaceful night's rest.

Following the curtain hanging rule of placing them as high as possible, we achieved the illusion of higher ceilings and a touch of luxury. While these velvet-finish panel curtains weren't fully blackout, when coupled with blinds, they delivered the light-dampening effect that contributes to a quality sleep.

Lastly, we decided to bid farewell to the mundane, builder-grade brushed nickel closet door pulls. We desired something a tad more distinctive without being overly conspicuous. The brushed gold, hexagon-shaped door pulls were an impeccable choice, offering a subtle yet stylish touch to our space.

Bonus item: How could I forget these beautiful, decorative trays? These 12" gold-toned, oval trays are the perfect catchall to use on your bedside tables. The pair retail for about $25 CAD.

Edmonton Decorator | Design Trends | Connect the Dots

The Polka Dot Door and More

I've been spotting them all over the place: blouses, scarves, shoes, purses, gloves and even on manicures. And what dominates in fashion, is soon to follow in home decor. What am I talking about? It's polka dots, of course!

I've gathered some of my favourite images that show the playfulness and versatility of the humble polka dot. From big to small. Bold to muted. There's a dot for just about every style.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Colour Trends | Radiant Orchid

How to Decorate with Pantone's Colour of the Year: Radiant Orchid

If you're an interior decorating fanatic, by now you've heard about the new "it" colour for 2014. I describe this shade as the crossroads where pink and purple meet. But, how do you decorate with it?

First off, I have a design secret to share with you. If you're ever wondering how to pick colours that 'go together', look to nature.

See this first example: this beautiful flower with shades of white/cream, pink/purple and greens and the virtual room I created on the right. You could mimic this look as seen in the picture, or switch it by putting a light grey on the walls and have the radiant orchid as the bed spread/pillows. I think this is a dream palette for the bedroom, don't you?

If you're looking for something a little more vibrant, look to this second example. This beautiful geode has a stunning array of colours, including: radiant orchid, amethyst, white, light pink and even turquoise. Imagine the colour scheme you could build using this slice of nature as your inspiration!

I suggest the best use of this colour, is as an accent. Whether it be pillows, curtains or flowers in a vase. The picture below is an excellent example how to use Radiant Orchid both sparingly and effectively.

And lastly, if you're anxious to add some Radiant Orchid to your home now, here's something that can easily be found in your home town. IKEA has a wonderful duvet cover (LYCKOAX) that beautifully balances shades of purples and pinks.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | How to Decorate if You Live in a Small Place

We don't all get to live in sprawling mansions and palatial paradises. So what's the average person to do when confronted with confined quarters?

Here are my top 10 tips for decorating small spaces:

 1. No room for end tables? Use wall space.

2. No room for dressers? Use a storage bed/ or under bed storage.

3. Break the rules! Take the door off. Paint horizontal stripes on the wall. Turn the bed into a day bed. Use creative storage solutions.

4. No room for an office? Turn your closet into a functional and fabulous work space.

5. Not one square inch to spare? Make your kitchen or dining room do double duty.

6. Want to make your mall space oh so chic? Don't be afraid of luxurious touches.

7. Have a puny powder room? Be bold! Just be mindful of the scale of things.

8. No formal entry way? Make one! A bench seat and a mirror will create a well defined space.

9. Low ceilings or small windows? Hang your curtains high! You can even do it in your bathroom.

10. Running out of places to sit? Cube or storage ottomans do double duty. Tuck them under a table when not in use.

Still have questions on how to spacify your small place? I'm available for both local and long distanct clients. Drop me a line or give me a call. :)
