How to Decorate with Pantone's Colour of the Year: Radiant Orchid

If you're an interior decorating fanatic, by now you've heard about the new "it" colour for 2014. I describe this shade as the crossroads where pink and purple meet. But, how do you decorate with it?

First off, I have a design secret to share with you. If you're ever wondering how to pick colours that 'go together', look to nature.

See this first example: this beautiful flower with shades of white/cream, pink/purple and greens and the virtual room I created on the right. You could mimic this look as seen in the picture, or switch it by putting a light grey on the walls and have the radiant orchid as the bed spread/pillows. I think this is a dream palette for the bedroom, don't you?

If you're looking for something a little more vibrant, look to this second example. This beautiful geode has a stunning array of colours, including: radiant orchid, amethyst, white, light pink and even turquoise. Imagine the colour scheme you could build using this slice of nature as your inspiration!

I suggest the best use of this colour, is as an accent. Whether it be pillows, curtains or flowers in a vase. The picture below is an excellent example how to use Radiant Orchid both sparingly and effectively.

And lastly, if you're anxious to add some Radiant Orchid to your home now, here's something that can easily be found in your home town. IKEA has a wonderful duvet cover (LYCKOAX) that beautifully balances shades of purples and pinks.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Furniture Shopping | IKEA

Do I love IKEA? Of course I do. They lured me in, at a tender age, with their playground of plastic balls. Once I was old enough to realize they sold furniture, I was captivated by aisle after aisle of stylish & affordable finds. Many dismiss IKEA as the big box store for cash-strapped students and renters. But, I think you'd be surprised by some of the chic items you can find in Sweden's national treasure. In fact, I posted these pics to my Rachellabelle Interiors Facebook page and Twitter account, and nobody was able to guess where I sourced them.

Today, I focus on accessories. Give these a shot if you're looking for a wedding gift, housewarming present, or just something to say "thinking of you." And, at $50 or less, for each grouping, you're going to get tremendous value for your dollar.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Before and After | Furniture Makeover

I don't know about you, but I grew out of the "matchy matchy" furniture sets a long time ago. Now, I'm all about building a design around unique, but complementary pieces. What's even more fun is finding vintage, or inexpensive pieces that you can transform into a thing of beauty.

Feast your eyes on these beauties. The creativity and skill that these DIYers possess is truly a gift.

Where do I even start with this dresser? It has writing on it. (Love it.) It has a vintage fan and camera on top of it as well. (More than love it.) Oh, and it's referencing NYC. (Big love!)
