Virtual Decorator | English Rose Living Room | Custom Moodboard

Interior decorating is a powerful tool that allows you to transform your living spaces into reflections of your personality and style. What's truly remarkable is that it can be achieved on almost any budget. Whether you're dreaming of a luxurious, high-end look or working with a more modest budget, interior decorating can make your vision a reality.

For example, this customized moodboard was inspired by a photo from a design magazine. Even without a specified source list, my experience as a seasoned decorator enables me to procure all the necessary furniture and finishing elements to faithfully replicate the inspiration picture.

Once completed and delivered to you, your custom moodboard will serve as your guide, helping you identify where to invest and where to save. As a Residential Interior Decorator providing virtual services, I'll use your inspiration photos to create a custom moodboard and shopping list that fits your budget and floorplan to a tee.

Virtual Decorator | Art Deco Inspired Moodboard | Rooms by Rachel

The Art Deco era, known for its opulence and sophistication, is one of my favourite design eras. This style, which flourished in the 1920s and 1930s, is characterized by its luxurious materials, geometric patterns, and rich colors. In this blog post, I'm sharing an Art Deco-inspired moodboard that incorporates elements like emerald green curtains, ivory dining chairs, a concrete fireplace, a brass and crystal chandelier, herringbone ceramic tiles, and iconic artwork by Tamara de Lempicka.

The moodboard

The inspiration

Green is my favourite color, so I was naturally drawn to the idea of crafting a moodboard centered around this quintessentially Art Deco shade. Ivory chairs with sleek lines and geometric designs complement this rich green backdrop.

Adding a modern twist to the mix, the concrete fireplace stands as a striking centerpiece. Its clean lines and minimalist design create a captivating focal point, balancing the opulence of the emerald green and ivory elements.

Of course, no Art Deco-inspired space is truly complete without the presence of a dazzling chandelier. Enter the brass and crystal chandelier, which not only illuminates the room but also infuses it with a touch of glamour.

For the flooring, I turned to the timeless herringbone pattern, a hallmark of Art Deco design. These tiles, in a neutral tone that perfectly complements the ivory chairs, introduce texture and pattern into the room, elevating the overall aesthetic.

To tie the room together and pay homage to the era, I decided to adorn the walls with artwork by Tamara de Lempicka. This Polish Art Deco painter is renowned for her bold and sensual portraits, which epitomize the style of the time.

In this carefully curated space, the emerald green curtains, ivory dining chairs, concrete fireplace, brass and crystal chandelier, herringbone ceramic tiles, and Tamara de Lempicka artwork converge harmoniously, creating an ambiance that exudes sophistication and timeless elegance.

Avoid These Decor Trends | Rooms by Rachel

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, new trends constantly emerge while old ones fade into obscurity. While some design trends have timeless appeal, others leave us scratching our heads in confusion. In this video, I'm going to show you a few decor trends that, for various reasons, I don't particularly like.

#MushroomLamps #ShipLapWalls #LiveLaughLove #RaeDunnDecor

In the world of interior decorating, trends come and go, and what one person loves, another may loathe. It's essential to remember that personal style and individuality should always take precedence over following trends blindly. While these trends may not be to my taste, they have undoubtedly found a place in the hearts of many homeowners. So, if you love shiplap, mushroom lamps, Live Laugh Love decals, or Rae Dunn everything, go ahead and embrace them in your decor. After all, the most important aspect of decorating your space is that it reflects your unique personality and makes you feel at home.

Virtual Decorator | Unified Elegance | Rooms by Rachel

When it comes to interior design, one of the age-old debates has always been whether to paint your walls and trim the same colour or to opt for contrasting shades. While both approaches have their merits, there's a timeless elegance in the simplicity of using the same colour for both walls and trim. Here are the top 6 reasons why I love painting trim and walls the same colour.

1. A Seamless Flow of Space
One of the most compelling reasons to paint walls and trim the same colour is the way it creates a seamless flow of space. When there's no visual interruption between the walls and the trim, your eyes move effortlessly around the room, making the space feel larger and more cohesive. This is especially effective in smaller rooms, as it reduces the contrast and helps avoid the feeling of a cluttered space.

2. Emphasis on Architectural Details
Painting walls and trim the same colour can bring attention to the architectural details of your home. Crown mouldings, baseboards, and other trim elements often go unnoticed when painted in contrasting colors. However, when they share the same hue as the walls, these details become an integral part of the room's design, enhancing the overall aesthetics.

3. A Timeless and Elegant Look
The use of the same colour for walls and trim exudes a timeless and elegant ambiance. It harkens back to classic interior design principles, reminiscent of historic homes and traditional aesthetics. This approach can create a sense of comfort and familiarity that many find inviting and calming.

4. Accent Pieces Shine
With the walls and trim painted in the same colour, any accent pieces or furnishings in the room become the stars of the show. Bold artwork, colorful furniture, or unique decor items pop against a neutral backdrop, allowing you to easily change the room's style without needing to repaint.

5. Simplified Decision-Making
Choosing a single colour for both walls and trim simplifies the decision-making process. There's no need to spend hours deliberating over paint swatches or worrying about clashing colours. This can be a lifesaver, especially if you're not confident in your interior design skills or if you're working on a tight schedule.

6. Versatility
While the idea of using the same colour for walls and trim may conjure images of monochromatic interiors, it's important to note that versatility is still on the table. You can play with different shades of the same colour to create subtle variations or incorporate different textures and finishes to add depth to the room.

So, what do you think -- will you be trying this in one of your rooms?

Primary bedroom moodboard featuring Amazon Home Finds

When my husband and I decided to give our primary bedroom a makeover, we were determined to bid farewell to the ubiquitous "boob" light and welcome a more sophisticated lighting fixture. Enter the 16" globe chandelier, which perfectly fit the bill! Priced at approximately $230 CAD, it struck an ideal balance between affordability and quality.

In our quest to enhance the bedroom's aesthetics, we also opted for these elegant round mirrors, which we positioned above our end tables, behind our tabletop lamps. To my delight, these 24" mirrors exceeded all expectations in terms of construction and beauty, and at the time of purchase, they were a steal at around $75 CAD.

24" brushed-gold, round mirrors

Our bedroom had long been missing a full-length mirror, and we stumbled upon a gem in the form of a 65" gold, recessed mirror with gently rounded edges. This mirror not only complemented our chandelier and the round mirrors adorning our bedside but also proved to be impressively sturdy. A piece of this quality would typically command a price tag in the several hundred dollars range, yet we acquired it for just $250 CAD.

Our next addition was a gold, wrap-around curtain rod, chosen for its ability to block out even more light when paired with blackout curtains. This combination created a cocoon-like sleep environment, perfect for a peaceful night's rest.

Following the curtain hanging rule of placing them as high as possible, we achieved the illusion of higher ceilings and a touch of luxury. While these velvet-finish panel curtains weren't fully blackout, when coupled with blinds, they delivered the light-dampening effect that contributes to a quality sleep.

Lastly, we decided to bid farewell to the mundane, builder-grade brushed nickel closet door pulls. We desired something a tad more distinctive without being overly conspicuous. The brushed gold, hexagon-shaped door pulls were an impeccable choice, offering a subtle yet stylish touch to our space.

Bonus item: How could I forget these beautiful, decorative trays? These 12" gold-toned, oval trays are the perfect catchall to use on your bedside tables. The pair retail for about $25 CAD.

Virtual Decorator | Creating a Moodboard | Art Deco Inspired

A common question I get from clients looking to select a colour scheme is: "How do I know the colours will go well together?"  My two answers are "look to nature" or "think of your favourite piece of art". Chances are, you're going to discover a perfectly harmonious colour scheme.

For this moodboard, I chose this Art deco-era Vogue magazine cover as inspiration for a living room design.
