Virtual Decorator | Creating a Moodboard | Art Deco Inspired



A common question I get from clients looking to select a colour scheme is: "How do I know the colours will go well together?"  My two answers are "look to nature" or "think of your favourite piece of art". Chances are, you're going to discover a perfectly harmonious colour scheme.

For this moodboard, I chose this Art deco-era Vogue magazine cover as inspiration for a living room design.

You see an amazing photo in a decorating magazine and you ask yourself, "How can I get that look? And how can I get it for less?"


Here's the inspiration: a chic, Hollywood Regency inspired gray and white master bedroom. I'd estimate the cost at $4500. Which, is not BAD for a master bedroom, but who wouldn't want to get the look for less??


However, here's how I got the look for less than 1/2 price!

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Moodboard | Urban Industrial

Metal is to the industrial look what wood is to the rustic look. The Urban Industrial style lends itself well perfectly to loft living. Hallmarks of this look include: caged lamps, concrete floors, exposed brick, distressed leather and worn metal.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Design Services | E-Design

I received one of the sweetest comments on my Rachellabelle Interiors Facebook page a while back. It was from a lovely Southern Belle wondering, if this neighbour to the north would work with her.

"I've wanted to talk to a designer but I was afraid of the cost but your designs are so beautiful and you have such a passion for it I just cannot resist asking you for help!"

While I typically work with local clients, how could I possibly turn down such a sweet request? I decided to work with her as my first ever "virtual" client. We did a phone consult, she sent me photos, and then the final designs were delivered by e-mail. Another pleasant conversation wrapped up the process. All in all, I think both parties were pleased with the results.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Client Moodboard | Clean Lines

I had the pleasure recently to work with a young, couple who were moving into a new house. They needed everything, from the ground up, and had a very clear idea of their design esthetic. I created, for them, a very clean and modern design. Lots of straight lines, bright whites, chrome, glass and graphic prints. Below are the moodboards for their design project. I hope they enjoy living in it, as much I as enjoyed creating it.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Moodboard | Aqua Ambition

Lady Gaga's outfit choices are a topic rarely left untouched. From prosciutto frocks to armadillo shoes, she has worn it all. This colour theory/mood board was inspired by "Mother Monster's" decidedly restrained ensemble she paraded at the 2011 Fashion Icon awards.

I love the bold combination of aqua and black. It brings to mind images of mythical creatures like mermaids and endless oceans. Like these two things, this combination can be both mysterious and moody.

If you feel like you've got "Aqua Ambition", this palette lends itself well to the contemporary and art deco periods alike.

So, I have to ask: Are you "gaga" for aqua and black?
