10 Decorating Tips to Steal from the Kardashians

Say what you want about the Kardashians and Jenners, but they sure do have fantastic sense of style. In fact, when I do watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians, I'm usually ogling their couture clothes and their enviable home decor. I'd say their mom-ager, Kris Jenner definitely had a huge influence on their personal style, because the homes of Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and Kylie tend reflect the design style of the Jenner mansion. Kendall is the only one that strays from the bunch, with a slightly more relaxed design esthetic.

You'll notice 10 repeating trends in their interior design. Their homes are usually high contrast black and white interiors embellished with bold patterns, highly polished surfaces, tons of family photos and loads of mirrors.  They tend to favour the Hollywood Regency style which relies on lots of bling, luxurious fabrics and symmetry. Rarely do they stray from their colour palette of black, white and grey. But when they do, they use a purposeful pop of colour.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Designer Spotlight | Jonathan Adler

Rachel Zoe and Mary McDonald are my top two style icons, and now I have to add Jonathan Adler to that list. I love the energy, exuberance and unabashed joy he puts into his designs.

According to his official website, he is "dedicated to bringing style, craft and joy to your life."

It's clear to see he is influenced by mid-century modern design and pop culture. And if the image below doesn't say it all, I don't know what does...

Below are a few of my favourite rooms. I love his use of pattern, texture and high contrast colours.

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Celebrity Style | Rachel Zoe Edition

This is fashion-obsessed uber stylist, Rachel Zoe. Her insane devotion to fashion (Chanel in particular) along with her quirky persona, has made her as famous as the long list of clients she serves.

I'm always interested to see how people's personal style translates to their home, and my name-sake Rachel Zoe is no exception. In fact, I spy with my little eye, some of my favourite design elements. There's a lot of black, white, chrome, lucite, stripes, and animal prints. More specifically, I see (and "I die" for) her: Eero Saarinen Tulip Chairs; Warren Platner side table; and the Barcelona day bed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. My gosh, it's almost as if we were separated at birth. Except, her life has a lot more 0's in it than my does. Both in her clothing size and bank account. But, I digress...

Here's a little virtual tour of her LA home. It's bananas!

Edmonton Interior Decorator | Designer Spotlight | Mary McDonald

Photobucket

If you've ever watched the over-the-top Bravo series Million Dollar Decorators, you're familiar with the dynamo that is Mary McDonald. She's a very memorable character with equally memorable style. If I were to compare my design esthetic to anyone's, it would be Mary McDonald's. We share a fondness for: bold patterns, pops of colour, liberal use of black and white, combining different furniture styles, symmetry and elegance.

Take note of her signature touches including: chevron stripes, Greek key pattern, bolster pillows, Chinoiserie and glints of gold.

If this post left you wanting more, pick up one of Mary's most recent books.
